Farmani was born in Khoremshahr, Iran, and found his great passion in painting at the age of 11. His artistic development gradually put him at odds with the political and ideological society he was a part of, and at the age of 27 he had to flee his homeland. In 1994 he came to Norway, where he has lived and worked as a painter ever since.
Medi Farmani sees the development of his artistic expression as a liberation from meaning in painting, liberation from a figurative, liberation from ideological thinking and any kind of. Painting (and singing) becomes a way of expressing pain and frustration that his youth and the freedom to live in his own homeland were stolen from him. Today, painting is a kind of play. He relies on the spontaneity and choices that come naturally through playing with materials he has spent a lifetime becoming familiar with. Life experience has taught him that he must trust himself and the choices he makes.
The 10 paintings Farmani is exhibiting at Førdefestivalen is a picture he has painted for the last 5 years. Contrast, depth, balance, light and patience are words he uses to describe the picture.
