Cédric Dind-Lavoie

A modern tradition bearer from Canada

In Cedric Dind-Lavoie's latest project, Archives , original folk music recordings from the 40s and 50s play the main role. Through passionate research, he has collected old songs and instrumental melodies in recordings with the Canadian folklorists Simonne Voyer, Roger Matton and Luc Lacourcière. The recordings are played on a tape recorder or turntable, while Cédric Dind-Lavoie and Alexis Chartrand, both multi-instrumentalists, accompany on piano, double bass and violin. The accompaniments are refined and lift the old recordings into a modern setting. Through good scenographic techniques, they create a poetic and beautiful encounter with old tradition bearers and their history. In both sound and image, the old voices are on stage, together with those who now carry on the traditions. It is music, but it is also a declaration of love to those who once were.

" Dind-Lavoie's treatment of these archives is deeply respectful as he takes care to preserve the fidelity and authenticity of the recordings while still managing to be bold and self-assured in augmenting them with tasteful embellishments "
— Brian Housman, Stationary Travels
