Martin Steinum Brun - Norway

Young folk musician of the year in 2024 

Martin Steinum Brun is a singer and tradition bearer from Vågå in Gudbrandsdalen. With his music, he takes the listener with him into the many stories of folk songs, everything from the absurd and humorous to the naked and personal. He accompanies himself on the kravi lyre and bygdeharpa.  

Brun has in recent years established himself as a strong voice on the young Norwegian folk music scene, and was the winner of INTROFOLK and the title of Young Folk Musician of the Year under the Folkelarmprisen 2024. He is educated at the Grieg Academy and the Norwegian Academy of Music in both classical and folk music. With a foot in several musical environments, he constantly challenges the usual framework of traditional music, but still has a desire to maintain the intimacy that permeates folk music.
