Energetic music activism from Guatemala

Sara Curruchich was born in 1993 in San Juan Comalapa, Chimaltenango, into a Mayan Kaqchikel community in the highlands of Guatemala. Her people have a long tradition of art and knowledge, and a history marked by resistance and struggle. Curruchich's music therefore springs from the people's collective and individual feelings, history, memory, culture, language and struggles, as well as her own personal position as an artist.

Sara Curruchich is the first indigenous singer from Guatemala to sing in Kaqchikel (her native language) in addition to Spanish, for an international audience. Her voice and message of love, consciousness, respect and defense of life in all its forms have led many to see her as a shining symbol of hope.

Musically, Curruchich crosses traditional Mayan Kaqchikel music with folk music and rock, and her strong commitment to historical memory has made her known, not only in the art and music world, but also in social debates both in her homeland and internationally. To date, she has performed on major stages throughout the Americas and in Europe. In conjunction with International Women's Day in 2020, Sara Curruchich played at the Tiempo de Mujeres festival in Mexico City, sharing the stage with Ana Tijoux and Mon Laferte.

Curruchich's music is a tribute to indigenous women all over the world. The album Mujer Indígena is proof of that, and here she collaborates with well-known artists such as Rosalina Tuyuc, Carmen Cúmez, Lila Downs, Muerdo and Amparo Sánchez. The tour with Mujer Indígena in 2022, visited 10 countries. Sara Curruchich held a total of 55 concerts and captivated the audience with her music and message. The following year, she played at the opening ceremony of the Folk Music Awards in Kansas, USA, participated in Folk Alliance International and had an official showcase at the SXSW festival in Austin.

In October 2024, she impressed the international music industry with a strong concert at Womex in Manchester. All in all - Sara Curruchich is a rising star on the international music scene, and Førdefestivalen are proud to present the strong voice from Guatemala in Norway for the first time!
