Førdefestivalen at the National Stage on Friday, March 24, 2017

Xabier Diaz - The Tambourine Man

Førdefestivalen presents the entire program for the summer festival at the end of March, specifically Thursday, March 23. The following day, Friday, March 24, the festival invites you to a concert with the Spanish "Tambourine Man", Xabier Diaz, at the Riksscenen in Oslo. In connection with this concert, the festival will also present the program for 2017.

Førdefestivalen and the National Stage

-It is natural for Førdefestivalen to collaborate closely with Riksscenen. We have done so on many occasions, and are now collaborating on, among other things, the largest production at the festival this summer, the Nordic Sound Folk Orchestra, the 40-piece orchestra that will be responsible for the opening concert in Førde Thursday 6 July, says director Hilde Bjørkum. In addition, we have this concert with Xabier Diaz in Oslo, which came about after we experienced Diaz at the international industry meeting Womex in Santiago de Compostela in October, and decided to bring him to Norway. -The concert with Xabier Diaz and the 11 female singers and percussionists in Abufeira de Salitre was one of the best things we saw during the four days we were in Santiago! Ergo, we have engaged him for a concert at Førdefestivalen in July, but we also asked Riksscenen if they could imagine having him in their spring program. They would be very happy to do so, says Bjørkum, who hopes that the audience both in Oslo and Førde knows his visiting time and gets to see the concert with this solid Spanish artist, who after a completed pop career has found his passion in the Galician tambourine.

Presentation of the festival program

Since Xabier Diaz will also be playing on Førdefestivalen in the summer, and since the National Stage and the festival are somewhat aimed at the same audience groups, the festival will also use the concert in Oslo to present the rest of the program that will take place in Førde July 5-9, 2017. -At concerts at Riksscenen we meet audiences who know Førdefestivalen , but we also believe that there is a great chance that we can come into contact with new audiences who will open their eyes to our festival and make the trip to Førde in July! says Bjørkum.

About the concert and Xabier Diaz

Xabier Diaz is a musician, composer, researcher and singer, and a specialist in the instrument Pandeireta Galega, the Galician tambourine. In Galicia, he enjoys celebrity status, among other things after many years as vocalist in the leading folk music group Berrogüetto, in addition to collaborating with a number of major artists. He is now achieving success with his own projects.

"The Tambourine Man" is Xabier Diaz's latest project, and is a meeting between his Galician tambourine and the aduf, the Moorish square drum widely used in Portugal. Or actually his tambourine meets 11 adufs, when Xabier Diaz teams up with the female singers and percussionists of the group Adufeira de Salitre. And he also brings along Gutier Alvarez on the hurdy-gurdy and Javier Alvarez on the accordion.

It took two years to find old lullabies and folk songs from Galician villages, and give them new arrangements and new interpretations through Xabier Diaz's soulful voice, confidently and elegantly accompanied by the song and rhythm of Adufeira. "The Tambourine Man" is a beautiful combination of voices, rhythms and choreography, an intense experience that you will carry with you for a long time.
