Full program and overview of all artists will be released today, Thursday 23 March. Tickets for all concerts are available at TicketCo.no. You can read the press release about the program here. Førdefestivalen 2017:
Forbidden music from Cape Verde on the top of Hafstadfjellet, 706 m above sea level; desert blues from Mali on the riverbank at Jølstra; samba from Brazil in a barn up at the foot of the mountain, newly created 'archive music' in the middle of an art exhibition; razor-sharp Bulgarian female voices in the church room; tango direct from Buenos Aires, modern Sami yoik and video art in an intimate theatre hall and a grandiose focus on Nordic folk music are some of the things the audience will experience at the 28th. Førdefestivalen , 5-9 July this year. -The theme for Førdefestivalen is the Sound of the North, says Hilde Bjørkum, but the festival is also the Sound of the World!
Nordic folk music and culture are making a good impression internationally. -For the opening concert on July 6th, we are doing a new production that is the largest we have ever done, says Bjørkum. The project, entitled Nordic Sound Folk Orchestra, is led by the Swedish orchestra general, Karl Johan Ankarblom, and will be a magnificent folk music orchestra with 40 Nordic folk musicians, soloists and composers from 4 Nordic countries. -It will be decades before we see a similar collection of Nordic folk musicians on stage again, says Ankarblom, looking humbly at the task he has been given.
In the concert, the orchestra will perform both newly arranged traditional music and newly written music by Jorun Marie Kvernberg (NO), Mia Marin (SE), Antti Järvelä (FI) and Harald Haugaard (DK) . They are also soloists at the concert, together with Olov Johansson (nyckelharp) , Olav Luksengaard Mjelva (harding fiddle), and the Nordic vocal queens Lena Willemark (SE) , Ulla Pirttijärvi-Länsman (FI/Sapmi) and Berit Opheim (NO). Participating in the orchestra are also Norway's winningest fiddler's band, Gudbrandsdølenes Spelemannslag , and members from the Finnish Baltic Crossing, the Swedish Folk All-in Band and the Danish Harald Haugaard band .

Sigrid Moldestad and Samuline - 10 years after TAUS - historic women's struggle with current appeal
Ten years after Sigrid Moldestad 's success with TAUS and the story of Samuline Seljeseth and the women fiddlers who played the fiddle against men and the will of the authorities, the follow-up will premiere during Førdefestivalen : Samuline - from the fiddle fly your song .
For Sigrid Moldestad, the topic is even more relevant now than it was ten years ago. -The fact that some defied the fear of being labeled and that some allowed themselves to be threatened into silence is frighteningly relevant. The fact that someone tries to control what and how we should be and what we should do based on their religious and ideological beliefs is important to remind us of. It has also happened here. We think it is something that concerns others, and forget that we have had stories here at home that are about the same thing, she says. -We must never be silent again. We must always tell the story. We must support each other and be aware of our own freedom as women and individuals. It has not come about by itself.
- Sigrid Moldestad is a fabulous musician and artist, and this performance is both important and highly relevant, says Hilde Bjørkum, director of the festival, who is also a partner and co-producer of the production. Sigrid brings a strong team of musicians with her, and we are looking forward to the premiere in Førde Saturday, July 8.
You can experience Tinariwen from Mali at Festplassen, in the park at Jølstra, on Saturday, July 8th.
The music you didn't know you loved - from 30 venues
Førdefestivalen has a vision of giving the audience new experiences. The artists at the festival have international careers, but are unknown to most people in Norway. The audience in Førde are open and curious and seek out artists which are new to them, explains Bjørkum. -I feel privileged to be able to create a festival with artists you can't hear at any other festival around the country. Our program is unique. Nowhere else in Norway can you hear so many different musical cultures and expressions "served on one plate" as in Førde during the festival.
The festival is also unique when it comes to the number of arenas that are put into use. - This year, more than 30 stages will be filled with top names from the international world music scene, such as the Grammy-winning kings of desert blues, Tinariwen , who have recently released an album to rave reviews, says Hilde Bjørkum. - From the USA comes the world's best klezmer band, The Klezmatics , who are celebrating their 30th anniversary, and we have the world-renowned choir Bulgarian Voices Angelite and the hottest fado name of the day, Ricardo Ribeiro , on the programme. The main weight of the program takes place in Førde , but there are also festival events in as many as 6 other municipalities in the region.
Kouame Sereba will have a concert at Halbrendstølen: Out on a trip, never mad!
Age is no barrier
Another vision for Førdefestivalen is to be a meeting place and arena for shared musical experiences across generations. - There is a value in itself to create such shared arenas, in today's society where we often see an opposite tendency, believes Bjørkum. With many low-threshold offers, such as morning concerts in kindergartens, cooperation with the Children's Hiking Association, music workshops for children and families and free festival breakfast and festival parade, it is well suited for those who want to bring children to the festival. The last day of the festival is a free family day with mini concerts and activities. Children's tickets for ordinary concerts are NOK 50, -, which is also a clear invitation to bring children to the festival, according to Bjørkum.
Opening of a new club scene in Førde
The festival "kicks off" with several events in it Førde and neighboring municipalities on Wednesday, July 5, with the new production Sunniva no, led by folk musician Gro Marie Svidal , where the audience will experience the legend of St. Sunniva from a new perspective. The same evening, the new club scene will be opened in Førde , at the festival hotel Scandic Sunnfjord Hotel & Spa, with American fiddle legend Bruce Molsky on stage. President of the Norwegian Parliament Olemic Thommessen will officially open this year's festival during the opening concert on Thursday, July 6.
