Nordic folk music in tasteful and intricate packaging
The trio Mojna has distinguished themselves as creative interpreters of Nordic folk music in combination with newly written music where contrapuntal elements and improvisation are central. With fingerstyle guitar, Hardanger fiddle and bass clarinet, they have created a slightly unusual soundscape, which has become their signature.
They have released three albums: Før sola skin' på tak (2022), Väntenätter (2024), which received a Folkelarm nomination and a rating of '6 out of 6' from NRK's record label. Thomas Eriksson, who is responsible for most of the composition, was also named Composer of the Year at the Swedish Folk & World Music Awards for the music on the album. The third album, Mareld , was released in October 2025.
Dag & Tid writes: Extensive use of counterpoint (parts that equally cross each other, often in different rhythm patterns) is not the most commonly used technique in modern folk music. But here it works very well, and it entails a wealth of detail that makes one discover something new every time you listen to the music.
The instrumental composition might easily lead one to imagine that the fiddle plays the melody, the guitar accompanies the chords , and the bass clarinet sticks to the bass lines. But that's not the case. The melodies crisscross, sometimes they play in unison, and the whole thing is quite complex while also playing on easily accessible moods like energy or melancholy.
