Parveen & Ilyas Khan | India
Indian traditions in virtuoso young attire
French-Indian siblings Parveen Sabrina Khan and Ilyas Raphaël Khan are seventh-generation musicians in a musical family in Rajasthan. They grew up in India, where they were trained in the entire North Indian classical music tradition that has been transmitted orally for over 3,000 years.
Parveen Sabrina Khan is a leading voice in the new generation of Indian singers and performs ragas, the melodic framework of Indian classical music, and is one of the few to bring to life the traditional folk songs of Rajasthan, maands, which are in danger of disappearing. With her deep and virtuoso voice, Parveen brings out the poetry in this sophisticated music, where the lyrical text, often short, leaves plenty of room for improvisation, both melodically and rhythmically.
Ilyas Raphaël Khan is a skilled percussionist and beatboxer, and accompanies with creative tabla playing and tabla boxing, a fusion of the two. In this way, the sibling duo renews and develops the classical Indian repertoire, following in the footsteps of their father, the renowned percussionist Hameed Khan Kawa.
Drawing on the strength of their two cultures, Parveen and Ilyas Khan take the audience into a world of varied and innovative sounds, giving us a tasteful blend of Indian music and Western rhythms.
